Who We Serve
The vast majority of GNCH clients are Afghan families who have come to the United States with SIV (special immigrant visa) status. Because they worked for the U.S. military, the U.S. embassy or other U.S.-affiliated agencies, they were subsequently at risk in their country and were promised access to permanent U.S. legal residency with the potential to apply for U.S. citizenship. Additionally, we have provided support for families from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Central and South America. Refugee families are referred to GNCH by other refugee serving organizations, such as Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area, NoVa RAFT, and Homes Not Borders, and by individuals we have helped in the past. Some are new arrivals. Some are relocating to the area, to be close to friends and families. Others have been in the area for a while but are struggling because they have never received full sponsorship support.
