Board of Directors

The Board of Directors was elected in August 2025 by the GNCH volunteer community. Board members will serve two-year terms, although in this initial year, half were elected to a one -year term and half to two-year terms.
Kathryn Tobias, Chair, is a member of the Lutheran Church of the Reformation. Previously Kathy was a writer, editor, and manager in the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration and chair of the Metropolitan Washington, DC, Synod’s Global Mission Committee (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America).
Laurence Broun (Larry), Vice Chair, is a community volunteer and with Kristyn Atkins leads the Bed and Mattress team. The Bed and Mattress Team secures and assembles bed frames and purchases mattresses. Prior to his retirement, Larry was Director, Office of Emergency Management, US Department of the Interior.
Mark Adelson, Treasurer, is a member of Hill Havurah. Prior to his retirement, Mark worked for Bank-fund Federal Credit Union.
Kim Koontz Bayliss, Secretary, is a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Kim is Principal for Klein/Johnson Group LLC.
Lynne Boyle is a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and lead for the Cleaning Team. The Cleaning Team provides all necessary products for keeping a clean home. These include floor care products for sweeping, mopping and vacuuming; laundry items for washing, ironing and hanging clothes; and dishwashing detergents . Additional items provided include all-purpose and window cleaners, toilet bowl brushes, sponges, and dust cloths, covered wastebaskets, sink stoppers, clothes hangers, and outlet covers for infants and toddlers.
Karen Getman is a member at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and co-leads the Bed, Bath and Toiletries Team with Barbara Beyna, a community volunteer. The team provides mattress pads and pillows, (preferably new) as well as sheets, blankets, towels, and shower curtains (in new to excellent condition) as well as essential toiletries and personal care items for all family members.
Gerry Glandon is a member of Hill Havurah and leads the Food Team. The food team provides about a one-week supply of cultural appropriate food for newly arriving refugees or resources to purchase food for families that are familiar with the location of grocery stores near their new homes.
Elizabeth Hannold (Beth) is a member of Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church (CHPC) and co-leads the Kitchen Team with Claudia Nadig, also a member of CHPC. Through a combination of new and used donated and purchased items, the kitchen team stocks more than 40 items to have on hand everything needed to prepare, serve, and eat a meal.
Dale Manty is a member of Lutheran Church of the Reformation and with Alex Vore leads the Furniture Team. Apartments typically include dining, living, and bedrooms, kitchens and balconies or patios. Donated furniture for all rooms, along with mirrors, pictures, and lamps, are obtained from donors throughout the DC Metro area. Volunteers are essential for the "heavy lifting" needed to move items from donor homes to new apartments, as well as for lighter tasks such as picture and mirror hanging, minor repairs, and furniture cleaning.
Helen Hou Matheson is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints+Capitol Hill Ward and is lead for the Baby/Toddler Supplies Team. The team focuses on the needs of children ages zero to three. Items provided (both donated and new) include cribs, toddler beds, bedding, car seats, strollers, diapers, toys, and some clothing.
Lisa Nickerson is a member of Christ Church+Washington Parish and lead for the Children’s Supply Team. All children, from pre-k through young adult, receive a new backpack filled with supplies appropriate for their grade and the school they will be attending. Supplies include pens, pencils, notebooks, erasers, markers, or crayons. Each family also receives a bag with new and used toys, games, balls, puzzles & books that have been donated to GNCH.
Susan Pincus is a member of Hill Havurah and represents the Appliance Team on the Board. The team provides televisions, microwaves, alarm clocks, and small kitchen appliances, including kitchen blenders, mixers, coffee makers, electric teapots, toasters, rice makers and slow cookers or instant pots, and spice grinders. The majority of the small appliances are gently used items donated by the Capitol Hill community.
